Lesson Plan: Teaching Safe Online Behavior During Science Lab

Objective or goal of the lesson

Following the completion of a class lab, students will post lab data on a class wiki, and post lab conclusion remarks to a class blog. (Note: It is a possibility that the computer teachers will work with students on this assignment too.)

Technology being used
Wiki
Weblog

Explanation of how technology will be used
A wiki will be used to post lab data. (i.e. data tables, graphs, measurements, descriptions, calculations, etc.)
A blog will be used to post written paragraph response to the lab and a review of response to the data.

Description of behavior is expected of students
Students will be expected to post scientific data only on the wiki. The wiki post will be completed as lab groups. Students blog post will include a written response detailing their initial hypothesis to the lab, whether the data supports or does not support the hypothesis, what they enjoyed most about the lab and what further questions they may have regarding the topic of the lab.

Process or steps for teaching
Day 1-2
1. Students will complete the lab in class, recording data in their science notebook
Day 3
2. Students will work in their lab groups in class to organize how they will display and present their data on the class wiki. (1/2 class period)
3. Students will also be given individual time to begin to write a rough draft of their lab conclusion (1/2 class period)
Day 4
4. Students will have class time in the computer lab to post data on class wiki.
5. Data will be posted according to lab groups. Groups will work together (either on one computer or individually – they will decide) to organize and decide how their data will be illustrated and displayed on the wiki.
6. Anything not completed in class will be finished for homework
Day 5
7. Students will have class time in the computer lab to post their lab response on a personal blog created for the class. All postings will be approved by the teacher before posting.
8. Any part of the blog post not completed in class will be completed for homework.

What actions will be taken and how you expect your students to respond to inappropriate content?
When inappropriate content occurs the following actions will be pursued:

  1. Wiki content:
  • Inappropriate content on the class wiki will be disciplined according to school guidelines as though the incident happened in the classroom. The reason for this is that only students will have permission and access to the wiki. Any postings will only be able to come from a member of the class.
  • The teacher will monitor all wiki postings. If by chance, outside inappropriate content is posted, the teacher will be responsible for deleting those postings.
  • In the event of inappropriate postings, the student(s) will conference with the teacher in order to understand the reason the content is unacceptable. Parents and administrators will also be notified.
  1. Blog Content:
  • Students will use their first name only in blog posts.
  • All blog responses will be graded as though it were a response written in class. Therefore, all responses should be written appropriate for in-class submission.
  • The student and the teacher will monitor all responses on the blog. In the event the inappropriate responses are posted the student will report such posts to the teacher to be investigated or deleted, if necessary.
  • In the event of inappropriate postings, the student(s) will conference with the teacher in order to understand the reason the content is unacceptable. Parents and administrators will also be notified.
